The Because Security migration (Q1 2024)

With every change…

— Why am I doing this? Or why not?

Personal growth often happens around answering this particular question. For many years, I invested time and effort into making my knowledge-base. Improving it, collecting my learnings and organizing them. So, that I can give back to the InfoSec community.

The old Because Security knowledge-base was based on Discourse, which is an excellent web software. It’s made for an entirely different purpose, which is community building.

Discourse is made by the makers of the popular Stack Overflow communities. My knowledge-base isn’t about community building, but about sharing thoughts and ideas.

Today, ideas need to be presented in a modern fashion. They need to be eye-catchers first, before they appeal to others. Even the best ideas have to be presentable. The time of ASCII ezines is over, although you may be able to find great information within them. Even today.

A screenshot of the old knowledge-based based on Discourse

The old Because Security

  • the content organization became convoluted

  • the quality of the content degraded (outdated)

  • the internet changed, and new options became available (Large Language Models can be used for content authoring and automation)

  • Discourse is a forum software with high loading time

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is limited (reasonably so)

The new Because Security

I am moving the relevant parts of my knowledge-base to the free-tier Atlassian Confluence Wiki.

  • The content will be labeled and organized into different Spaces per category.

  • I will use very few Confluence plugins (for my personal use-case most plugins are completely free)

  • I am creating an English / German front-page here based on the Squarespace CMS

  • Mobile / Apps are a focus

  • This migration will take 1–2 months because I am quite busy.
